What an exciting weekend we’ve just had, with people coming here from all over Australia to join the activities for the annual Lighthouses of Australia (LoA) get-together.
LoA members came form Cairns, Coffs Harbour, Kiama, Melbourne, Hobart, Perth and Adelaide and
were given opportunities to tour the Cape Jaffa Lighthouse (CJL), day and night, do a walking tour to the Cape Jaffa cottages, and take a trip to the Margaret Brock Reef.
Presentations by Anne Daw, Armin Huefner and Professor Miles Lewis covered the historic relocation of CJL, the fabrication of the base for the tower and a comprehensive overview of the development of the iron lighthouse all over the world.
A highlight of the weekend was the presentation of a Royal Humane Society medal and certificate, which was awarded to Head Lightkeeper John Jameson after rescuing survivors of the Nyora shipwreck on July 10, 1917. Jameson descendants, Peter Mart and Jill Cole, presented these to Maureen Andrews, Chair of the Kingston SE National Trust Branch, with Steve Saville, the diver who discovered the Nyora wreck, joining the presentation online from Port Lincoln. Lighthouse guides will now have some wonderful items to show visitors as they tell the incredible story of the rescue in 1917.
There were several displays set up in the Senior Citizens’ Clubrooms, which people were able to
enjoy.

It was another very successful Kingston SE National Trust event, supported by the fabulous efforts of
KNT members and the Lighthouse Committee.
LoA President, Ian Clifford, squeezed this event in before returning to Sydney to address the International Association for Lighthouse Authorities, on Heritage Lighthouses in Australia. He plans to mention the CJL and Green Cape (NSW) as examples of successful adaptive re-use of heritage lighthouses.
